CHARITY champions who organised various fundraising events in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association have presented a cheque for an impressive €26,500 to the charity.
The events included flag days in Killarney, contributions fromTralee Lions Club and the Killarney Soroptimists, a donation from the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, a contribution from Ballinagree Vintage Club and numerous fundraising ceilí dances and coffee mornings.
The cheque was presented at a reception in the Killarney Plaza Hotel by Killarney man Christy Lehane, Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone, to Marie Reavey, Regional Development Officer with the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Marie remarked: “We cannot thank everyone from Kerry and North Cork enough for their fantastic support. Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone have been tirelessly fundraising for the IMNDA since 2011 and we would be lost without their continued support as over 83 per cent of our income comes from fundraising and donations.”
She added: “Without support such as this, we would be unable continue providing vital services for people living with Motor Neurone Disease.”
Motor Neurone is a progressive neurological condition that attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. It can affect how a patient walks, talks, eats and breathes and most people die within 1,000 days of symptom onset.
The IMNDA provides specialised services for people affected by the debilitating disease such as equipment on loan, financial assistance towards home help, advice and home visits by specialist nurses. There are currently over 360 people living with MND in Ireland, 11 of which are from Kerry.
