29th January2021 Voice for MND Tralee Telephonist
The month of February is with us again and the IMNDA are again running their annual sponsored silence campaign “Voice 4 MND”. The idea is that you stay silent for a minimum of 30 minutes so you can experience what it would be like to loose your voice. Imagine one hour, imagine one day, imagine one week without your voice. A huge thanks is due to all the Motor Neurone sufferers who posted their stories telling of their experiences and coping with losing their voices. I am thinking of Kerry woman Madeline O’Connor who was diagnosed with MND in April 2020. The diagnosis devastated Madeline as she was forced to retire from work in the Eir Call Centre because her voice had deteriorated so much and she was slurring her words. Madeline says what she misses most about losing her voice is that she cannot have chats with her daughter Marie, or have conversations with her friends. I am thinking of Marie from Dublin who says she is fighting every day to keep her voice, and Gerard from County Offaly who said , “So if you are too tired to speak, sit next to me, because I too am fluent in silence.
Sadly all KFMN fundraising efforts have been put on ice for the time being but the purpose of this Sponsored Silence as Madeline said was to create awareness and to fundraise for the IMNDA. This can be done by visiting their website www.imnda.ie and fill out on line the registration form. Simple as that. Secondly spread the awareness by sharing your sponsored silence on social media and nominate friends and family to join you. You can also donate to the campaign by texting MND to 50300 to donate €2 where 100% goes to the IMNDA and as Madeline O’Connor of Tralee said , If we could raise awareness of the needs of Motor Neurone patients then it would be a wonderful confidence boost for us to go out into the community and enjoy life as normal. At present there are 19 people with Motor Neurone Disease in Kerry and this campaign aims to give them and all other MND sufferers a voice which unfortunately is something that this debilitating illness robs them of.
We are still in the slow lane, not meeting each other and staying at home because because of the Corona Virus. We have become more aware of zoom and things virtual. Thanks to our special nurses for all they do for our MND patients in these difficult times and I highly recommend that you read a wonderful article by MND specialist nurse Fidelma Rutledge, http//imnda./a-nurses -perspective/ We will get through this difficult pandemic because we will do all that is asked of us which is for our good and it will be great to get together again and wont there be a lot of catching to do and hopefully before too long we will all have received the vaccination.
Regards Christy

21st November 2020 Death of Patrick Quinn
It was sadness that we learned of the death of Patrick Quinn at the young age of 37 who along with Pete Frates inspired the worldwide phenomenon that we knew as the Ice Bucket Challenge. Patrick was diagnosed with MND / ALS a month after celebrating his 30th birthday back in 2013 but his interactions with social media back in 2014 telling of the novel idea of people being drenched with iced cold water to raise funding for MND / ALS took the whole world by storm finally raising a huge €168 million worldwide for medical research. Celebrities, politicians, sports stars all came on board to be associated with the ice bucket challenge.
Part of Patrick Quinn’s legacy is the huge ice bucket challenge that took place in Ireland where ordinary family members, clubs, schools and celebrities alike took the challenge after Daithi O’Shea took a drenching while presenting the Rose of Tralee. The reslt ofthis wetting netted the IMNDA a massive €1.7 million which enabled the association to employ a third specialist nurse for two years and giving a considerable amount of money towards medical research. All this is thanks to the New York man Patrick Quinn who decided to fundraise soon after he was diagnosed with MND / ALS.
May his noble soul rest in peace.

16th October 2020 IMNDA Virtual AGM / Conference
Sadly we were not able to have our Annual Physical AGM this year due to Covid -19 restrictions. However thanks to modern technologies we were able to log in to our computers and have the AGM / Conference zoomed into our homes.
I congratulate IMNDA CEO Roisin Duffy, PR Maeve Leahy and all the other people who put this years IMNDA Annual Conference / AGM 2020 together. Jonathon Healy again proved to be a a very capable facilitator . The officers presented a well prepared reports and all the speakers updated us on MND research and how MND affects the brain, trial participations, provision of care and finally IMNDA nurses presented a well prepared report on the everyday work experience in these Covid -19 times so everybody take a well deserved bow. Finally every good wish to all our MND families. Do stay safe and stay in touch and please god next year we will be able to get together again and renew old acquaintances at a normal physical conference.

Following on from tribute to Sean Hurley featured below it was nice to learn on Saturday September 11th 2020 that the popular Radio Kerry presenter had indeed posthumously been honoured with an IMRO award to add to his PPI award he had won in 2010. Sean passed away on September 7th 2020 and I know he would he would be thrilled with this very deserved award.

I first realised this way back on February 2008 when he came to Darby O’ Gill’s House Hotel in Lissivigeen to do a Radio Kerry Rambling House special.

12th July 2020 Drink tea for MND Mick and Kathleen Gleeson etc
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who generously supported the IMNDA initiative Drink Tea for MND. Thanks to all the people who hosted virtual tea parties, people who gave personal donations on line and all the loyal people locally who handed in donations to Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone which were handed in to the IMNDA.
Donations are always very welcomed by the IMNDA as they rely on fundraising for 86% of their annual budget in these strange times of the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions the response was particularly gratifying. Thanks and good health to you all.

Today I am drinking Virtual Tea for MND supporting the IMNDA to raise much needed funding to support more than 400 people living with MND on Ireland. Despite social distancing we can still be together whether its for a cup of tea during a zoom chat or in the back garden with friends. To donate go to www.imnda.ie
Every year MND associations across the globe mark June 21st as a special day of recognition where the International Alliance of ALS / MND associations across the world undertake a range of activities to raise awareness and keeping focussed on the search for the cause, treatment and eventual cure of ALS /MND.
Today we think of all our MND sufferers many of who are raising funding themselves themselves. Thanks to all our friends in the Kingdom who have donated so generously to this Virtual Tea Drinking initiative.

10th June 2020 Drink Tea for MND
10th June 2020 ALS / MND Day to be celebrated 21st June every year.
International MND / ALS day is celebrated throughout the world on June 21st every year. Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone usually hold their annual flag day in Killarney town on the weekend of the 21st June. This year is different because of Covid-19 pandemic restrictions means our flag day is cancelled, The IMNDA traditionally hosted a Drink Tea for MND on this week also but alas this has limitations this year due to the pandemic. But all is not lost because the IMNDA came up with a novel idea of hosting Virtual Drink Tea for MND and KFMN are happy to lend their support and encouragement to the superb initiative and encourage people to drink virtual tea for MND. All proceeds donated will be very much appreciated as this year 2020 many fundraising events had to be cancelled. The IMNDA depends heavily on the generosity of the public to carry out all its vital services and as I have said many times before in the past it is the public and and our supporters of the association who generate over 83% of its income.
KFMN say thanks again to our loyal friends and supporters who never left us down in the past and hopefully this venture will be your cup of tea.

17th April 2020 Just a thought for Easter Christy Lehane
As we journey together through these uncertain times of Covid-19 I wish you all peace and blessings of Easter 2020. As we self isolate and cocoon we are now in the slow lane with lots of time to reflect and put our houses in order.
We are especially aware of all our Motor Neurone families and friends at this time. All of us vulnerable people at home salute and thank all medical staff who risk their own health working in hospitals, nursing homes and covid centres. I’m also thinking of our IMNDA nurses who continue to provide specialised care in these difficult times.
In conclusion I know that we will all get through this together by doing what is asked of us. Take time to enjoy the sunshine and listen to the birds and to look after each other and stay safe and to stay in touch.

24th March 2020 Cllr Michael Gleeson
As Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone I wish to acknowledge the great work done by the current Mayor of Killarney Cllr Michael Gleeson in highlighting the issue of the salaries of four specialist nurses employed by the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. In December 2019 at a Kerry Co Council meeting Cllr Gleeson brought up the issue of funding of four specialist care community nurses employed by the IMNDA stating that these nurses salaries are paid from voluntary donations only saving the Irish state the huge cost of hospital or nursing home care.
Presently these four nurses provide support, care and advice to more than three hundred and eighty patients, their families and carers across the twenty six counties.
On the 20th February 2020 Cllr Michael Gleeson had a motion on the agenda of the Regional Health Forum South meeting requesting that the HSE South calls on the HSE and the Department of Health to pay the salaries of the four nurses employed by the IMNDA. Cllr Gleeson made a very impassioned case for funding telling all present what Motor Neurone Disease really is and the way it affects so many people many of which were well known to him. He suggested to the meeting that the Motor Neurone sufferers are deserving of better from the State. Not better nurses because the present ones are superb but more nurses and properly funded nurses.
On Monday 24th February 2020 Mayor Gleeson did an interview with Radio na Gaeltachta on the topic of funding of four IMNDA nurses.
Finally I wish to thank my neighbour and friend Cllr Michael Gleeson for highlighting the issue of funding for IMNDA nurses and putting the issue on a different platform. Please God a meeting with relevant HSE personnel and the Board of the IMNDA will soon be arranged and we look forward to a positive outcome.

24th March 2020 Peggy Kelleher Presentation €700
Christy Lehane Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone was pleased to accept a cheque for €700 from Elizabeth and Peggy Kelleher on behalf of Castleisland native T J Nelligan at the Heights Hotel Killarney on March 20th 2020. This cheque was the proceeds of various ceili’s organised by T J during 2019 with all the monies raised going to Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone.
We sincerely thank T J for selecting our charity again this year providing much needed funding for the provision of specialist medical equipment for our Motor Neurone sufferers an also to pat the wages f the IMNDA specialist nurses. All of this with the aim of enabling our MND sufferers to spend as much time as possible in the comfort their own homes. While fundraising does not get any easier we are very grateful to see people like T J Nelligan to come to our assistance so many times.

4th January 2020 Cllr Michael Gleeson
As Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone I want to take this opportunity to thank Mayor of Killarney Cllr Michael Gleeson for raising the issue of payment of the four Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association specialist nursesat a recent meeting of the Kerry County Council. Cllr Gleeson requested Kerry County Council to take up this issue with the Department of Health / Health Service Executive at the next HSE Forum South meeting in February 2020.
Sadly the IMNDA is reliant on fundraising / donations for 86% of its annual budget. Until 2014 the IMNDA had only two specialist nurses to cover the whole country from Malin Head to Mizen Head. Then came the Ice Bucket Challenge which enabled the association to pay the wages of a third specialist nurse. More recently thanks to the huge fundraising done by Father Tony Coote the IMNDA were able to employ a fourth specialist nurse. I find it so hard to believe that fundraisers like us must continue to fundraise to to pay our nurses wages.
We in Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone are very heartened by Cllr Gleeson raising these issues with the HSE and we hope that the powers that be will deal with his request favourably. This terrible disease is on the increase and while research is ongoing to find a cure or at least to slow down its progress we rely on the very specialised care and support of our four specialist nurses . None of us knows who will require the services of our nurses in the future as Motor Neurone Disease has no regard for age or status.
Thanks again to Michael Gleeson pictured below for his initiative and we hope and pray for a favourable outcome.

21st December 2019 Kilbrin Presentation of €17,100Kilbrin Presentation
Following a cheque presentation of €17,100 to the IMNDA by Pat Phil and Julie Nolan in the Community Centre Kilbrin County Cork on Thursday night December 12th 2019 a Culture night took place. This was a most enjoyable night where tea, sandwiches, buns and christmas cake was served in abundance by a very friendly staff to the very big crowd in attendance .
Tom O’ Riordan who acted as Master of ceremonies was also the man who put the whole evenings event together and he also sang a few songs to get the night started. Soon I realised that there was a lot of talent on show. Some were story tellers, others had long recitations which left me wondering how does ones brain retain all these verses. There was also dome beautiful music provided accordion and guitar and singers to complement it all which made for a most enjoyable night. I was privileged to be there for all the music and craic with such good and friendly folk.
Thanks again to Tom O’ Riordan and his committee for organising this huge event tonight. Thanks to Charleville Vintage Club and District who attracted entries from all over the South West region for the charity run. Most of all a special thanks to Pat Nolan who was the main organiser behind the event, and tonight’s party in the Community Centre is a testament to the respect in which Pat and his family are held in the Kilbrin area. I was delighted to be in their company for the night.
I wish Pat and his family all the best going forward.

Kilbrin native Pat Nolan and his wife Phil and family and Charleville & District Vintage Club Chairman Michael Herbert organised the event. Special thanks goes to all the volunteers who helped on the day to make the vintage run such a a success. It must also be stated that all this is due to the esteem that Pat and his family are held in the community and further afield.
Christy Lehane speaking on behalf of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association thanked everyone present for the warm welcome extended to him and he also noted the community spirit that was very evident on the night. Christy thanked Pat and Phil Nolan and family and Charleville Vintage Club for raising this huge amount of money for the IMNDA who are the only organisation in Ireland who provide specialist care and support to people with Motor Neurone Disease, their families and carers. Christy stated that 86% of the annual budget of the IMNDA is reliant on fundraising. All monies go towards the provision of specialist medical equipment , financial assistance towards home care and research . The IMNDA are pleased to say they now employ four specialist nurses to look after our MND patients and their families..

It is with sadness that we learned of the death of Pete Frates otherwise known to us ad the man who came up with the idea of the worldwide phenomenon of the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness and funding of ALS also known as Lou Gehrigs Disease and Motor Neurone Disease. This challenge was to raise money for research back in 2014 and this event took social media by storm with participants eventually raising more than €199 million worldwide thanks to Pete Frates who himself was diagnosed with MND in 2012 aged 27. Facebook tells us that in 2014 a total of 2.4 million videos recorded people being drenched with iced water.
In Ireland the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association announced that monies raised by the Ice Bucket Challenge amounted to €1.6 million. Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone took part in this challenge at the time. The best news from the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014 was that it enabled scientists to further their research and thus were able to identify a new gene associated with MND Please God a cure may be found soon for MND but it is good to know that some progress has already been achieved by identifying this new gene thanks to Pete Frates who came up with the novel idea of the Ice Bucket Challenge. May he rest in peace.

17 October 2019
Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone hosted a very successful public information evening in the Plaza Hotel Killarney on Thursday 17th October 2019. This meeting was well attended . The theme of the meeting was “Telling Kerrys Story”of peoples association with Motor Neurone Disease. The meeting was opened by Chairman Christy Lehane who told those present that Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone was launched in Darby O’Gills House Hotel on the 11th May 2011 on the inspiration of of recently diagnosed Motor Neurone Sufferer John Reidy, his family and friends with the aim of raising awareness and fundraising for the IMNDA
Marie Reavey Regional Development Officer IMNDA informed the meeting of the work the association does for Motor Neurone Sufferers such as providing home visits by MND nurses, providing financial assistance towards home care, provision of specialised medical equipment and funding for counselling and research and telling all present that 83% of the IMNDA annual budget is reliant on fundraising and how this money is spent.
Mr Alan McDonnell formerly from Kilgarvan Co Kerry gave a very moving account of his mother Mary’s battle with MND. Mary was diagnosed with MND in 2005 and passed away in August 2011.Alan stated that it was so hard for both himself and his father Tom to watch what his mother was going through with this terrible disease . The family full of praise for the IMNDA and the doctors and nurses especially the palliative day care centre in Tralee Co Kerry
Speech and Language Therapist D. Dominika Leescka told the meeting in simple language of her interactions with MND patients saying that something as simple as listening to the patient does make a huge difference in understanding MND not alone for the patient but for the doctor also.
Rathmore man John O’Neill told the meeting of his wife Bridies association with MND saying that while Bridies illness was short she did not let it curtail her love of holidays and travel
We had a video presentation from Derrynane native John O’Donoghue who currently resides in Brisbane Australia telling the meeting of his Motor Neurone journey and we also had a video of his visit home to Ireland earlier this year.
IMNDA specialist nurse Katie Kinsella was the final speaker on the night and she outlined her work dealing with MND patients and their carers and she told the meeting that she was only a phone call away from people who might need her or have a question about MND,
In conclusion Christy Lehane Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone read an email he received from Andy McGovern who hails from Co Leitrim and happens to be the worlds longest MND sufferer having lived with the disease for 41 years. Andy is a true IMNDA ambassador and is always on hand to listen and help other Motor Neurone sufferers
Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone hope that the meeting was of some help and enlightenment to people

It is with deep regret that we learned of the recent passing of Fr. Tony Coote the Dublin priest who suffered with Motor Neurone Disease. What a champion he was for all Motor Neurone sufferers pushing himself to the limit to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease and to travel the length of Ireland to raise a huge €600,000 for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. Fr. Tony said early in his illness that his positive spirit did not free him from the every day struggle of coming to terms with MND feeling optimistic but frustrated. We thank Fr. Tony for telling his story so honestly and frank on RTE and other print medias surely giving some consolation to other Motor Neurone sufferers.
As Fr Tony was incapable of walking and if the truth was told he was probably not physically able for the mammoth 27 day
journey never the less he chose to be pushed all the way in a very basic wheelchair by volunteers. He did all this to honour a commitment he gave when he was first diagnosed with MND. What a inspiration he was to all MND sufferers throughout the length and breath of Ireland. The huge monies raised by the 54 year old priest enabled the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association to hire a 4th Motor Neurone specialist nurse to care for our Motor Neurone sufferers. Everyone is so grateful to Fr. Tony Coote for all that he has done.May he rest in peace

Last September local Rathmore woman Shirley Nagle decided to host a coffee morning for a cause close to her heart in Cahills Bar Rathmore Co. Kerry. She called on her friends Kay O Keeffe, Nora O C onnor, Grainne Lynch and Sheila Casey to help organize this event. The aim was to raise awareness and funding for Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone and to acknowledge all the work done by the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association for Motor Neurone sufferers and their carers.
The coffee morning was an absolute success and the ladies concerned were overwhelmed at the huge turnout not to mention all the contributions they received on the day and the days that followed. A big thanks to the people who supplied all the food on the day. Thanks to Austin Murphy and Bernie Cahill for their hospitality in providing Cahills bar for the event. The generosity of the people was something to behold said Shirley but the people of Rathmore / Gneevguilla general area are all too familiar with Motor Neurone Disease. They remember the recent passing of Bridie O Neill while the late Paul Casey, Patrick Carmody and Patsy Hickey all passed away fro this awful disease some time back. As Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone Disease. Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone Christy Lehane took this opportunity to thank the families and friends of these people for all they have done for Motor Neurone Disease by raising huge amounts of money since Kerry Friends were formed back in 2011
In October Shirley, Sheila, Grainne, Nora and Kay went 100ft to the top of the Hogan Stand in Croke Park for an Abseiling challenge again this time to raise funding for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. This challenge was not for the faint hearted but as the girls said it was for a great cause as 86% of the Irish Motor Neurone disease Association budget is reliant on fundraising.
Sadly there is still no cure for Motor Neurone Disease but we are happy in the knowledge that the monies raised go towards the provision of specialist nursing care for motor Neurone patients and to afford them the comfort and dignity of spending their end of life in their own homes. We do not know when or who will need the service next but the one thing we do know is that the numbers of people being diagnosed with MND is on the increase.
Again thanks to the five girls for raising the huge amount of over €7,211 from both events. Brilliant

The Kelleher family and Kerry friends of Motor Neurone thank T.J. for organizing this fundraising event and creating awareness of Motor Neurone Disease. Thanks to all the dancers who turned up for the ceili and all the generous people who could not attend but donated. Thanks to An Riocht Athletic Club for providing their premises for the ceili. Thanks to the band Ui Bhriain – John & Martina who played exceptional music. Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone Christy Lehane stated that the money will go towards funding specialist Motor Neurone Disease nurses and providing specialist medical equipment thus enabling Motor Neurone sufferers to spend the the end of life in the comfort and dignity of their own homes. Co Kerry has the highest number of MND patients per capita in the country. Fundraising is still very necessary as 86% of the annual income of the IMNDA still relieson fundraising
Ceilí raises vital funds for a good cause.

Motor Neurone Disease Global Anniversary Day!
From Andy McGovern:
I’m one of those with MND/ALS MND who cannot give the thumbs up sign on this our MND global awareness day. 21st of June. But I am fortunate to have survived 40 years with the disease. I call on research to redouble their effort in finding at least something to arrest this terminal disease. At 82 years of age – I doubt if anything will be found in my lifetime. But that does not worry me. I plea for my colleagues who will be diagnosed tomorrow and hear this shocking sentence: “You have MND. There is no cure, life expectancy 2 to 5 years.” The ice bucket fundraising endeavour has raised awareness all over the world of this cruel disease and has raised millions. The people of the world are behind us! I do believe that if this disease reached epidemic proportions or become contagious – then a cure would be found in short time. But one person in 40,000 contacting this terminal illness is definitely a major drawback as far as research is concerned. “What’s one in 40,000”?? Wake up research – you found a cure for abola disease in a very short time. “A voice in the wilderness – Happy Grandfather’s Day Andy

Dan was first into the ring as Timothy Clifford auctioned buckets of iced water to throw over him. Six buckets were auctioned and Dan had four buckets thrown over him, he then then nominated Kevin Reilly and Tim Kelliher who had the remaining two buckets thrown over them. It was all in a good cause and a bit of fun as well. Chairman Christy delighted that Taoiseach is getting on his bike to help out the cause
A KNOCKNAGREE native who is living in The Kingdom was not going to let a golden opportunity pass when he met An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who was out canvassing for his MEPs.
Christy Lehane, who is the chairman of the Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone, simply strolled up to Mr Kenny and asked him to “hop up on a saddle” for the Ring of Kerry charity cycle race on July 5. Mr Kenny immediately accepted the request and the rest, as they say, is history.
Mr Lehane of Tureen, Knocknagree said their voluntary group were firstly delighted to be one of nine chosen charities to take part in the famed Ring of Kerry cycle. Secondly, he was certainly chuffed when Mr Kenny said he would be “delighted,” to cycle in their charity race for them.
Mr Kenny will be joined by hundreds of participants from throughout Duhallow who want to lend their support. “We were firstly, just thrilled and very grateful to have been accepted by the organisers of the Ring of Kerry and to now have An Taoiseach cycling for us in July is simply the icing on the cake,” said Mr Lehane.
He said Mr Kenny was very well versed on the Motor Neuron Disease (MND) and he took a great interest and asked lots of questions about their charity. MND is a fatal disease that affects the motor neurons in the brain and the spinal cord causing muscle wastage.
Mr Lehane explained that it was set up in 2011 as his great friend, John Reidy of Killarney, was diagnosed with MND.
The duo had both worked at Eircom and had taken early retirement.
Mr Reidy was alive when the charity was set up and Mr Lehane said they currently have 18 volunteers.
While Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone is based in east Kerry, it lends a very supporting helping hand to people and their families throughout Duhallow.
Mr Lehane returned to his old stomping ground Duhallow and rounded up Anthony Nash, Aidan Walsh and Lorcan McLoughlin.
The trio along with Jimmy Barry Murphy have all given the cyclists who will cycle for the Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone disease their full backing.
It’s the charity’s aim to purchase as many Tobii C12EGaze devices for their sufferers.
These devices resemble a computer screen in appearance with an in-built camera that is programmed so that the actions normally initiated by the computer mouse are instead triggered by eve movement. This enables patients to have a conversation, send emails and surf the internet.
These
machines
cost €13,000 of which there are 12 in the country of which four are in Cork. It’s their aim to bring some machines to the Kingdom.
The average life expectancy of someone diagnosed with the disease is between three to five years. In Ireland, one person dies every five days from it.
“Since our inception, we have been inspired by the many MND sufferers and their families that we have met along the way and they have given us great support and encouragement,” said Mr Lane.
With regards to the cycle on July 5, Mr Lehane said there has always been a “wonderful carnival atmosphere,” for cyclists as they make their way to the finishing line with crowds of people of all ages clapping and shouting warm congratulations.

“Get on yer old bike” – An article by the Irish Examiner reporter, Donal Hickey
On yer (old) bike to battle motor neurone disease
It’s time to drag out that rusting old bike that has lain forgotten in the garden shed, most likely under lots of other clutter accumulated over the decades.
Dusted down and well oiled for the roads, two-wheelers from the distant past are being brought out for a novel High Nellie fundraiser on behalf of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Those taking part in the event at Lissivigeen, Killarney, on Sunday, June 24, will be required to wear period costume from the 1950s and 1960s.
There will also be a loop walk in conjunction with the cycle, with prizes for the best-dressed men and women.
Last year, the Kerry friends of IMNDA raised more than €50,000.
About 300 people have the neuro-degenerative disease nationally, including 15 in Co Kerry.
IMNDA spends €1m annually, of which 20% comes from the HSE. The balance has to be collected through fundraising activities.
The programme will also include musical entertainment at Darby O’Gill’s outside Killarney, a tug-of-war, and children’s events.
